Getting the no makeup makeup look (with mineral foundation)

Light, odor-free and hypoallergenic - these are the reasons why women worldwide love mineral makeup foundation. When applied, mineral makeup doesn’t appear pasty, off-color, or evident on skin, unlike traditional makeup. Plus, it doesn’t have that fishy, fatty smell “old” makeup has. Of course, the same goes for mineral-based eyeshadows and concealers.

What I love most about mineral foundation is that it appears so natural when applied to skin. With the right makeup base or primer, the foundation lasts longer too.

Application

The first step I do when doing my facial makeup is to moisturize with a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Non-comedogenic means it’s free from ingredients that clog the pores and cause breakouts or pimples. I use Celeteque facial moisturizer.

After moisturizing, I apply BB cream* – a 2-in-1 (foundation-concealer) makeup base. BB means blemish balm. BB cream originated from Germany and was initially made and recommended for patients of burns and surgery as it can heal and conceal blemishes all at the same time. You might wonder why there’s a lot of Korean-made BB cream in local stores. That’s because Korean celebrities are the first people who used it as a makeup. Well, I use it as a primer. I use Maybelline BB cream because I don’t want to buy one huge pot – the ones under Korean brands.

After applying BB cream, I put on a good under eye concealer. Sometimes, I skip this step and put on a lighter shade of mineral foundation on the under eye area.

Then after the base comes the mineral foundation. For some tips on getting the right shade, read this entry. I like to use a nice, soft puff for smoother application. Just make sure you apply the powder evenly.

A good brand worth trying

If you’re still new to mineral makeup, try Ellana Minerals. Ellana Minerals has a wide variety of mineral makeup, from foundations and eyeshadows, to lipsticks and concealers. Plus, it’s a Filipino brand.

Ellana knows mineral makeup and they’re passionate about educating those who sample their products about proper makeup application and techniques. They have this small brochure containing all the things you need to know about mineral makeup. It also has great makeup tips you’ll surely benefit from.

I found them at a tiangge in Alabang and ever since I bought my first Ellana product – a mineral foundation – I keep on coming back to them for new products to try and new brochures to read. It’s a nice thing they update their brochures every season.

I love their mineral foundation because it has the most diverse shades among mineral powder brands I’ve checked out in the market. Plus, they recommend the right shade for your skin tone depending on which tone category your veins’ color fall: warm undertone, cool undertone, and olive undertone.

Ellana mineral foundation comes in three different sizes:
1g - Php 100
4g - Php 300
6g - Php 420
