Street Smart Philosophy

March 29, 2011

I was watching a new local make-over show the other day, wondering how its "sosyalerang host" could be more blunt as she talked to a recently-widowed domestic helper. They brought the woman to a clothing boutique and expected her to change her outlook in life just by giving her a couple of expensive outfits. Of course, she looked stunning (more like the boss than the hired help) but it leaves us with the question, "Can a helper with a below minimum wage monthly income afford branded clothes or make-up?"

That brings us to the fact that most fashion and make-over shows (and even blogs) feature only expensive brands and products which most Filipinos can't afford. That's just how lifestyle media works - sponsored by clothing and cosmetic companies.

That's when I came up with the idea of creating a blog that will address the needs of the ordinary Pinay, whose goal is to dress appropriately and fashionably without having to spend more than a thousand pesos on a single piece of item.

Fashion, to be technical about it, is a general term for a current popular style or practice, but being in fashion doesn't mean your wardrobe should always be in "season." Fashion is not just about designer goods. It is a way of life, an art. It is personal expression.

Being street smart means being able to look good because of good proportion, taste and style - not because of that nauseating price tag. The street smart fashionista is someone resourceful, level-headed and and in-the-know. We hope our blog helps you become one.
