How to pick the right shade of red lipstick

Fancy buying a new red lipstick? Before heading out to the nearest beauty store, read this first and check what shades of that red lipstick matches your skin tone.

For women with fair skin. Women with light skin tone will look best with red wine shades or those reds with a blue or brown undertone like mauve red or rosy red. These kinds of red will give the light skin that sultry glow especially if you have a pinkish skin tone. For sample colors, browse Cover Girl's Continuous Color in Really Red or Clinique in Angel Red.

For women with medium to dark skin. Girls with that sexy tanned skin can amplify their sensual look by choosing red lipsticks with deeper shades – those with brown or tawny bases. Colors similar to Revlon’s Matte Lipstick in Really Red and Kat Von D’s Painted Love Lipstick in Underage Red would work well.

For women with dark brown skin. Femmes with dark brown skins will surely turn heads by wearing lipsticks with pinkish reds, strong fuchsias, and orange-based poppy reds.

Choosing the perfect red lipstick doesn’t stop with checking your skin tone. You should keep in mind your teeth color too. Yes, you read it right, teeth color. Remember those close-up photos of yours where your yellow teeth became the focal point? Well, that’s because of the wrong lipstick shade you were wearing. If you have teeth discoloration, opt for colors with blue undertones to make your teeth appear whiter.

After those two rules, we can now proceed to selecting what lipstick type suits your overall qualities and requirements for that perfect stick. Check out the lip color types and choose what will work best for you:

Sheer – This type provides a wet and shiny look, like a sheer lip gloss, which provides a little color and some provide just a glaze. It’s perfect for those going for a natural look and great for those with thin lips as it gives your pout a fuller look. Apply to thin lips after putting matte lipstick for a more gorgeous look.

Cream – Creams are like lip balms with conditioner and oils that color your lips while moisturizing them. This is best for those with dry, flaky lips who want light and smooth pout all day long.

Matte – Matte lipsticks provide a clean, vibrant, almost natural color to your lips. These are best for those who have fuller lips due to its lack of shimmer and gloss. As we all know, glossy shades give the illusion of plump and fuller lips. I personally love this type. When I apply it, I make sure I moisturize my lips first with a gloss or a balm to avoid cakey appearance. You may also go for semi-matte if you have very dry lips. There are also matte lipsticks with moisturizing ingredients today, which is a great thing.

Shimmer – This type works like sheer in plumping up thin lips. It also has tiny pieces of mica in metallic shimmers that make your lips shiny and the lip color noticeable, making it perfect for those with thin lips.

Long-lasting – This type has formula that makes the lip color last up to 10 hours. It’s highly recommended for those with dry lips because of its deep moisturizing ability that makes lips colored, smooth, and soft.

I prefer matte type. Remember, for those who also go for matte, make sure you smoothen and moisturize your lips first before applying so it won’t appear cakey. I like to brush my lips gently with a tooth brush (or if you have lip scrub, then scrub it first), then apply chapstick or a little lip moisturizer like Avon Moisture Therapy, and then apply the matte lipstick.

Happy red lipstick shopping,
-E
